PLACEHOLDER COPY. The brief was a room that could be cooked in hard and then closed. Everything that gets used daily lives in the pantry behind a pair of full-height doors. What stays in the main room is a run of fumed walnut, a sink, and nothing else on show.
Fuming darkens walnut through the whole thickness rather than sitting on the surface as a stain does, so a scratch in five years reads as wear instead of damage. It also means the colour cannot be matched later from a tin, which is a real trade and worth saying out loud.
The pantry doors are the widest single leaves we have hung. They are hollow core in solid oak, built like a door rather than a panel, which is the only way to get that span to stay flat in this climate.
